Urge Congress to Support the Reforming Disaster Recovery Act

Disasters in our nation and across the globe are increasing in frequency and intensity. The federal government must support at-risk communities in better preparing housing and infrastructure to withstand and recover from future disasters.

The Reforming Disaster Recovery Act, as introduced in the 116th Congress, would permanently authorize the Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program. CDBG-DR provides states and communities with flexible, long-term recovery resources needed to rebuild affordable housing and infrastructure after a disaster.

CDBG-DR is often one of the only recovery tools available to the lowest-income disaster survivors, but vital resources have been diverted after past disasters from the people and communities with the greatest need. The bill would help ensure limited disaster recovery funds reach who the program was designed to serve: the most vulnerable survivors.

It would also allow all federal agencies involved to access the full breadth of data needed to make informed public policy decisions, allow for greater public participation in disaster recovery efforts, and help public and private entities better recognize gaps in services and identify reforms needed for future efforts.

Please support legislation like the Reforming Disaster Recovery Act, and urge your colleagues to do the same, to help ensure communities are better able to maintain vital services during and directly after a disaster and to recover more equitably and efficiently.
